Nowsadays Izamal is the heart of the religious cultural legacy of the Yucatan people.
At Izamal visitors can be witnesses of the prehispanic time period with its mayan temples of Kabul, The Conejo (rabbit) and Itzamatul; the colonial period with stoned colonial buildings dating back to the XVI and XVII centuries and its people, proud of their heritage, mixture of Maya and Spanish elements.

The yellow and white colored buildings in Izamal resembling the colors of the holly see flag and its monastery dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, one of the main leaders of the Franciscan order are outstanding. The Monastery and the church, visited in 1993 by Pope John Paul II are considered the most important sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Yucatan.
