Site of the famous, or infamous, "Auto de Fe" of 1562, when Bishop Fray Diego de Landa burned valuable Mayan manuscripts and codices, Mani still conserves imposing examples of its enigmatic past.Parroquia y Exconvento de San Miguel Arcangel.- Its foundation dates from 1549, however its fecade belongs the XVII century and its style is considered as sober baroque. The main access has a half point arch with a unadorned moulding, the door jambs on both sides are boarded and the pilasters fluted. Up the choir window a niche with the image of San Miguel is found.
A majectic architecture cloister is located at a side, thick and heavy walls distinguish the convent. The open chapel was the first one built in the Yucatan and calls the attention due its size that compete with the size of the temple. It is a simple vault that has flute as the only decoration in all the arch and the jambs.
Inside the temple stand out the renaissance altarpieces built between the XVI and XVII centuries and considered among the best that exist in all the Yucatan Peninsula. its structure is simple and are adorned with colours; the main altarpiece has three bodies, corinthian columns and sculptures into the niches. Inside the walls of the convent one can still see the old vegetable garden and the remainders of the ancient waterwheel.
Located at the old cloister a small liturgical museum has been setup with different objects like furniture, clothes, images, chalices and sacramental objects as well as ancient collected letters and some arqueological pieces.Touristic Services:
