Izamal

There are few colonial cities as charming as Izamal, chosen by Pope John Paul II as the site of his meeting with the natives of Mexico and central America during his August 1993 visit to the Yucatan, Izamal has everything: Mysterious Mayan ruins, surprising convents, beautiful architecture, charming streets and parks, beautiful works of art and excellent tourist services.
Two of the outstanding features of Izamal are the majestic Franciscan convent of the Virgin of the Conception with its 75 arches and very big atrium (only the Vatican has a bigger one); Main pyramid Kinich-Kakmó, the country's third largest prehispanic pyramid whose remains have been partially preserved and which base seems to have 2 acres.
Tour de city in a "Victoria", an open horse drawn carriage; visit the Museum of Sacred Art; enjoy the plazas, markets and restaurants; this is only part of what you can do in Izamal.
