Hidden in the jungle and lying some 23 kilometers south of X'puhil, we come to the Hormiguero archeological site. Although extensive and made up of three separate groups, only the Southern Group is relatively accessible, and is characterized by Structure II, its largest and most important building. Graced by highly elaborate masked facade and flanking twin towers, this construction is a typical example of the Rio Bec style. The mask is an enormous representation of the monster of the Earth, in wich the open jaws form the entrance to the building. The impression created by this magnificent temple in the middle of the jungle makes a visit to the site well worth while. Hormiguero attained the peak of its development between 730 and 830 AD.Visiting hours: Every day, from 8:00 to 17:00
